Lots of good flicks in Lakeview this weekend, but if you’re in the mood for something a little different, check out the 2011 Chicago United Film Festival, opening tonight at Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport).

According to Music Box’s website, the Chicago United Film Festival is “where art and creativity create a united film community.” United Festivals began in 2002 in Tulsa, OK, eventually reaching Chicago in 2009. The “humorous, touching and provoking” festival fare includes Chicago premieres and special engagement screenings. From documentaries on real-life caped crusaders (“Superheroes,” tonight at 7) to a midnight showing of Chicago favorite “The Blues Brothers” (also tonight), there’s something for everyone.

As an added bonus, there will be a free block of short films screened tonight and September 12-15 at 5:30 p.m. each evening.

The Chicago United Film Festival runs through next Thursday, September 15, when it closes with a bang: a John Hughes double feature of “Sixteen Candles” (7 p.m.) and “Weird Science” (9:30 p.m.). Awesome.

All film screenings are $10. An All-Access Pass – including all 21 films and shorts, a $210 value – is available for $50 ($25 for students). More details about each film can be found here.
